Kia Mau te Wehi!, curated by Jamie Berry, an exhibition where toi speaks stories, where it pays homage to the rich cultural tapestry of Te Whanganui-a-Tara and its enduring mauri as a grounding space that has always nurtured, encouraged and inspired artists. Kia Mau te Wehi! is proud to be the visual arts cornerstone of the Kia Mau Festival.
HIKULE’O is a work that celebrates the stories and mana of the paramount chieftess of Tonga’s underworld, Pulotu. Hikule’o was responsible for harvesting, fertility and had supreme power over her brothers’ children.
This solo performance explores the inter-relationality between land, the artist’s body and her memory and future memory, drawing on notions of performance, social critique and cultural resistance.
ixHand is heavily influenced by the sounds and music of POC (whether from Aotearoa or as far as Africa) as well as our homelands (the Islands). Though we love to play music of today, the energy we create when mixing is the energy that we feel brings a sense of home to POC that are within the space.
