The timeless, intense and transcendent solo ritual created and performed by Santee Smith, NeoIndigenA calls for connection and renewal. The elemental experience fiercely cycles through sacred portals between Skyworld, Earthworld and Underworld. Ascending into Skyworld she embodies celestial animals, cosmos, and Skybeing. Digging into the darkness of the UnderWorld, she becomes underwater serpent, insects and tectonic plates. Landing back in the EarthWorld, she embodies rhythms and forms of the Earth. NeoIndigenA honours land and feminine body as sacred, ceremonial practices and is both ancient and present. A physical marathon Santee is an artist in her full power, unleashing a wild, fragile, potent performance the draws inspiration on her Onkwehon:we (Iroquois) way is being.
Kaha:wi Dance Theatre premiered NeoIndigenA at the Enwave Theatre, Harbourfront Centre, Toronto in 2014 and have since toured across Canada and into the US in 2017. In 2014, NeoIndigenA was nominated for Toronto’s Dora Mavor Moore Awards for Outstanding Female Performance – Santee Smith; Outstanding Lighting Design – Arun Srinivasan; Outstanding Sound Design – Jesse Zubot, Tanya Tagaq, Cris Derksen, Adrian Harjo and Michael Red.
