Kia Mau Kōrero – 2024 Update #1

In December 2023, the second Kia Mau Festival Production Skills Course took place at Te Auaha, in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, designed specifically for our whānau in the Pacific Festivals Initiative. Announced in 2020, the Pasifika Festivals Initiative provided $12 million over four years through a phased, ‘four waves’ funding approach. The Initiative featured a partnership between Manatū Taonga, Toi Aotearoa, Ministry of Pacific Peoples and the Pacific Business Trust.

It became clear in our kōrero as part of the Pacific Festival Initiative that Pacific festivals in Aotearoa were deserving of more aroha. Run by huge volunteer (we like to say volun-told) communities, often the people who put their hands up and their hearts into these festivals haven’t had the opportunity to access role specific training. We wanted to share the tools that we had. Tailored exclusively for this community, the course brought together emerging talents in stage management and sound composition, fostering a creative journey that left participants inspired and connected.
