NGA HUA TOI

E ngā mana, e ngā reo, e ngā karangatanga maha o ngā hau e whā! Tihei mauri ora!

Throughout COVID-19, we have recognised the deepened barriers and inequities for Māori dance and theatre artists and practitioners. Ngā Hua Toi is a project created by The G8 and funded by Creative New Zealand’s Te Hā o Ngā Toi 2019 – 2024 Strategy. Powered by The G8, Ngā Hua Toi was created to tautoko and manaaki Māori dance and theatre practitioners.

Powered by the G8 is a collective of artists, who have shared whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, ideas and experiences, to support and inform the way we imagine live performance experiences led by a Māori and Pasifika worldview. Since 2018, the G8 have been gathering to kōrero and to develop ways in which we create and tautoko within our local and global communities.

The G8 is a collective including Amber Curreen, Tama Waipara, Dolina Wehipeihana, Marama Lloyd, Hone Kouka, Tanea Heke, Tainui Tukiwaho, Tānemahuta Gray and Mīria George. Our kamupene and ahurei include Te POU Theatre, Te Tairāwhiti Arts Festival, Betsy & Mana Productions, Atamira Dance Company, Kia Mau Festival, Hāpai Productions, Te Rēhia Theatre, Taki Rua Productions and Tawata Productions.

In March 2020, during Aotearoa’s first Covid-19 national lockdown, Hone Kouka composed a paper titled Kia waiata ahau proposing a much needed pathway to support, sustain and enhance the professional and creative development of Maori dance and theatre practitioners. Nga Hua Toi is a six-month pilot programme funded by Creative New Zealand’s Te Ha Maori Arts Strategy.

In August 2020, producer Vanessa Immink (Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Apa) was employed to lead the programme of Ngā Hua Toi. Our programme includes:-

  • ZUI: Zoom Hui
  • ZĀNANGA: Zoom Wānanga
  • Online Tutorials
  • Database / Directory of Māori dance and theatre artists/practitioners
  • Calendar of Events for Māori dance and theatre activities
  • Ongoing communication to our Māori dance and theatre artists/practitioners with resources, feedback and pānui
